The Dallas Cowboys are adding some serious experience to their defense.

Eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller is returning to Texas after agreeing to join the Cowboys for his 15th NFL season. The move gives Dallas a veteran pass rusher with years of big-game experience as the team prepares for the upcoming 2026 season.

Miller, 37, is one of the most accomplished active defensive players in the NFL. He enters the season with 138.5 career sacks, the most among active NFL players and tied for ninth on the league’s all-time list.

A Homecoming for Miller

For Miller, this is more than just another stop in his NFL career.

He grew up in Texas and played college football at Texas A&M before becoming one of the league’s biggest defensive stars. Now, after spending the 2025 season with the Washington Commanders, Miller will return to his home state wearing a Cowboys uniform.

The veteran has also played for the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills and Commanders during his career.

That experience could be especially valuable for a Cowboys defense that is looking for improvement.

Why Dallas Made the Move

The Cowboys struggled to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks last season. Miller may not be the same player who dominated the league earlier in his career, but his experience and ability to rush the passer still make him an interesting addition.

Dallas is hoping the veteran can provide more than statistics. His leadership, playoff experience and knowledge of the game could also help a younger defensive group.

The Cowboys have missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, so there is plenty of pressure on the team to make a stronger push this year.

What Fans Should Expect

It would be unrealistic to expect Miller to return to his prime form overnight. He has not made a Pro Bowl or All-Pro team since 2019.

But football is not always about having the biggest name on the roster. Sometimes, a veteran who understands how to prepare, read offenses and perform in important moments can make a difference.

For Dallas, the signing is a calculated move: add experience, improve the pass rush and give the defense another player who has already been through the biggest stages of the NFL.

The Bigger Picture

The 2026 NFL regular season is approaching quickly, and the Cowboys will have plenty to prove.

Miller’s arrival does not automatically solve Dallas’ defensive problems. But it does give the team another experienced piece as it tries to return to postseason contention.

For Cowboys fans, there is also something special about seeing a Texas native come home.

Now the question is simple: Can Von Miller still make a difference when the games start to matter most?

That answer will come on the field.
